OLED is the short version for organic light-emitting diode. It is a special type of LED, sometimes called organic LED. It is called 'organic' because the thin layer film consists of certain organic compounds. The film is sandwiched between two layers, one metal cathode layer and one anode layer. The thin-film is named emissive layer. By applying current to the layer, light is emitted.

Organic LED display technology is used in computer displays and television screens, but the most common area where OLED is used are mobile phones and portable mp3-players. Several phones like the Nokia 6125i or the Samsung SGH X120 are powered by an OLED screen, either as an external display or as a main screen. There are several dozens of music and video players with an OLED display.

The Cowon iAudio 6 is powered by a 260k colour, 1.3 inch width screen that allows a resolution of 160 x 128 pixels. The popular Zen Micro Photo mp3-player has a 1.5 inch screen with 262 thousand colours. There are many other players like the iRiver or Maxfield Max Movie that also use an OLED screen.

Why are so many devices powered by organic LED displays$%: First of all, OLED is exciting. It allows displays that are flexible, transparent or ultra-thin. Exciting products are therefore possible. The brightness is greater in comparison to traditional displays and the durability is higher, which means the temperature range by which the device can operate is broader. Another plus is lower power consumption, especially for portable devices like music players or cellular phones.

Why are OLEDs so thin and power efficient, compared to traditional LCDs$%: Organic LEDs do not require a backlighting function, hence less power is needed and less space is used.

Organic light emitting diodes can also be used as a solid state light resource; they can produce white light and can be used as a bulb replacement. Even the military is examining how OLED can be used in uniforms to build an updated display inside a soldier's helmet visor. Another future vision is a window with transparent organic LEDs that can lighten the room at night and translucid daylight the other times.

There are many technologies today on the market that claim to be the next big thing, but OLED is definitely worth to keep an eye on.
